Auditions for the Olympic Ceremonies

bd47.jpgAn entire women’s hockey team, Afro-Brazilian martial artists and dancers of all varieties are among the 3,200 people who’ve already applied to volunteer at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympics.

And VANOC is still looking for more applicants — about 7,500 to be exact. Games’ organizers want a pool of about 10,000 applicants to choose from.

David Atkins, executive producer of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, said the sooner people apply, the sooner they’ll learn if they are being offered an audition.

“We need performers to bring our mass choreography to life on the floor of B.C. Place,” Atkins said. “But, just as importantly, we need performance volunteers to act as athlete marshals, placard bearers to lead countries into the stadium and audience leaders who’ll help spectators participate in the show.”

Of the people who applied, only 23 per cent are men. Statistically, this means male applicants have a greater chance of being selected.
Auditions start on May 1 and volunteers must be 17 or older on that date to qualify…Metro Vancouver reports.
